A History of Promoting Women’s Wellness
In October of 1996 the first Gulfport women’s dance was held in memory of Sonia Plotnick, Phyllis Plotnick’s mother who died of breast cancer. The proceeds were given to the Womyn’s Energy Bank to help women pay for mammograms and breast cancer treatment. In 1997, the dance organizers decided the women’s community needed additional financial assistance with their healthcare needs, thus The Sonia Plotnick Health Fund was established.
Over the years, the Fund has seen an increasing demand for assistance with a variety of healthcare needs. The Sonia Plotnick Health Fund has provided over 175,000 dollars to woman in our community since its inception in 1996.
Our MissionTo promote the wellness of women by honoring requests for financial assistance with both traditional and non-traditional healthcare.

The Sonia Plotnick Health Fund (SPHF) provides financial assistance for healthcare to women and to promote preventative care for women.
The fund is available to all women in need of financial help with their health care. This may include medical, eye care, dental, and mental health costs.
Equal consideration is given to alternative and complimentary treatments.
Preventative care such as screening mammograms and colonoscopies, dental cleanings, dental x-rays and well women physicals are funded at 100 per cent to encourage women to seek this care. Screening is an important tool in preventing disease and disability.
The SPHF covers 100% of preventative care such as: Well Woman Exams, Paps, Mammograms and other preventative tests.
Due to the decrease in donations, as of April 16,2012 the SPHF no longer covers dental repair such as: crowns, bridges, root canals, fillings, veneers, teeth whitening, implants and false teeth. SPHF will fund 100% of preventative Dental Exams (yearly check ups, cleaning and X-Rays) as funds are available.
The Sonia Plotnick Health Fund services the Florida counties of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, and Sarasota.
The Sonia Plotnick Health Fund is administrated by an all volunteer board. We rent no office space or equipment and have no paid employees.
The majority of our funds are reserved for the women who need them. The board reviews all applications monthly and provides funding based on need and available funds.
